How to Start Therapy and What to Expect in Your First Session

Starting therapy with Closing the Wound begins with a short email and a free 15-minute intro call. This page explains what happens in the intro call and the first sessions, and how to prepare. Sessions are online and in English, for adults and couples in Myanmar and Thailand.

How Do I Start Therapy for the First Time?

Email closingthewound@gmail.com and say whether you would like a free 15-minute intro call or a first session. A short message is enough. Please leave out clinical details, which are better discussed in session.

What Happens in the Intro Call?

The intro call lasts 15 minutes and is free. You can ask questions and get a sense of whether working together feels right. There is no obligation to continue.

What Happens in the First Session?

The first session is mostly about understanding what brings you: what is happening now, what you have already tried and what you would like to change. It also covers how sessions work and the limits of confidentiality, and you are asked for your written consent before any health information is collected. You decide how much to share.

How to Prepare for Your First Session

  • a private room where you will not be overheard, and a phone, tablet or computer with a camera and microphone (How online sessions work)
  • a few notes on what you want to talk about, if that helps
  • any questions you have about how counselling works

Is the First Session Awkward?

It can feel strange to talk about personal matters with someone new, and many people feel nervous. You can say so, and you do not have to tell your whole story at once.
