About Closing the Wound

Closing the Wound is an online counselling practice based in Yangon. It offers counselling in English to adults and couples in Myanmar and Thailand, with one US-trained, master’s-level therapist.

The Name

The name reflects a view that runs through the work. Difficulties such as anxiety, low mood or trouble in relationships are often connected to older hurts, and to the ways a person learned to protect against them. Lasting change can mean attending to those older wounds as well as to the symptoms.

Training

The qualification is a US master’s degree in mental health counselling, with further training in Somatic Experiencing and in parts work drawn from Internal Family Systems (IFS).

Background

Philosophy and finance came before training as a therapist. Long periods on meditation retreat shaped the approach, especially the attention to the body that runs through the work. Several years of living in Southeast Asia, including time teaching in international schools there, are part of that background too.

How the Work Is Done

Sessions are online and in English, and clients include both expats and people from Myanmar and Thailand. The work combines several approaches and covers complex trauma, anxiety, depression, life transitions and relationships, as set out in Focus areas.
